FEDERICI MAKES RETURN TO THE PODIUM
29 August 2004 - Yamaha Racing
Round: 14 - Grand Prix of Europe (Germany)Circuit: Gaildorf
Team Yamaha De Carli riders Claudio Federici and Antonio Cairoli enjoyed good results with respectively third and fourth overall. Alessio Chiodi came home second in the first race, won by Maschio (Kawasaki) but did not score in the second race. However all eyes were on Ben Townley (KTM) this weekend to take his first MX2 world championship, a crash on turn three saw the Kiwi struggle to restart his engine and the chance of his much needed overall win was gone. Meanwhile Antonio Cairoli (Team Yamaha De Carli) took an early but brief lead. On-form Michaël Maschio (Kawasaki) relegated Cairoli to second place on lap two but the gutsy Italian pushed past the Frenchman on lap five and held onto the race lead for another seven laps. Also in the fight with Cairoli and Maschio, Alessio Chiodi (Team Yamaha RZ), Marc de Reuver (KTM) and Claudio Federici (Team Yamaha De Carli) held onto the leading two and waited patiently for mistakes to come. First to falter was Cairoli on lap 12 with a crash which dropped him four places, then de Reuver developed a gearbox problem on lap 19, and two laps later the race was settled. Maschio took the win from Alessio Chiodi, Claudio Federici, Sébastien Pourcel (Kawasaki), and Antonio Cairoli in fourth. Race two saw de Reuver fire into an early lead, followed by Claudio Federici (Team Yamaha De Carli), Antonio Cairoli (Team Yamaha De Carli) and Ben Townley (KTM). Positions remained deadlocked for four laps, and then Townley began to make progress through the pack eventually taking the lead on lap 15 from de Reuver which he held onto until the finish. De Reuver came home in second, followed by Sébastien Pourcel (Kawasaki), Antonio Cairoli, and Claudio Federici in fifth. Maschio (Kawasaki) took the overall win, followed by Sébastien Pourcel in second and Claudio Federici in third. Following a practice session crash Andrew McFarlane was unable to race in Gaildorf. His visit to hospital revealed a broken right collar bone and he is expected to be out of action for at least six weeks. Claudio Federici (Team Yamaha De Carli) – third position “The first race was OK but I didn’t have such a good feeling on the track. Then I saw that Antonio Cairoli had crashed and so I pushed really hard and eventually managed to pass Mark de Reuver to finish the race in third place. Then in the second race I had a really good start and held onto second place. Then on lap five I made a mistake and jumped out of the track and had to rejoin the race in seventh position. I then pushed really hard to pass Michaël Maschio and my fifth place finish gave me third place on the podium. I’m upset that I made a mistake in race two but very happy with my overall result today.” Antonio Cairoli (Team Yamaha RZ) – fourth position “Although I led the first race for seven laps I’d done too much in passing Maschio and the pace at the front forced me to crash. The second race was better and I wanted to keep up with Mark de Reuver but he was too fast on this track. I was much happier in the second race though because I rode much more consistently. Overall I’m happy with my performance today but of course it’s sad to see other riders such as Sword and McFarlane unable to race because of injuries.” Andrea Bartolini (Team Yamaha RZ) – seventh position “In race one I crashed on the third corner with Ben Townley and this put me right at the back of the race so I worked very hard to push through the pack and ended the race in 13th place which is quite a good result. In race two I got a good start and came around lap one in sixth place. I managed to maintain my speed throughout the race swapping positions with Pourcel and Federici to eventually finish in seventh which again was good although I was very tired after all the effort I put into race one.” Alessio Chiodi (Team Yamaha RZ) – 11th position “I got a good start in race one and could see that Cairoli was pushing a little bit too hard so I waited for him to make a mistake which he did on lap twelve. This put me up into second spot but Maschio was too far ahead for me the catch him. Second place was a good finish though. Unfortunately my bike developed a problem on the sighting lap of race two and I was unable to take part in the race which was very disappointing.” Andrew McFarlane (Yamaha UK Race Team) - injured “I went over the bars on the triple jump and landed badly and crashed really hard. I knew straight away that I’d hurt my shoulder and a medical examination revealed that I’d broken the right collar bone. I’m still hoping that I’ll be able to compete in the Motocross des Nations at Leirop, but my main priority now is to get fully fit for next season. It’s an upsetting way to end the year like this but these things happen and I hope to come back stronger next year.” Race classification MX2 Round: 14 - Grand Prix of Europe (Germany) Circuit: Gaildorf Circuit Length: 1830 Lap Record: 1'' 51.579 (Steve Ramon, 2003)
