Tortelli takes first pole position for eight years

Red Bull KTM rider Sebastien Tortelli has taken pole position by almost a second over the next best MX1 rider at a sunny Agueda for the Grand Prix of Portugal, the third round of the FIM 2006 World Championship.

The Frenchman proved to be quickest throughout the Timed Practice session and confirmed his first GP pole since 1998. Jonathan Barragan was also at home on the steep slopes and was particularly satisfied with a lap that placed him seventh.

The MX2 races and practice schedule for the Grand Prix were cut after heavy rainfall Friday night flooded the circuit. One Free session and a Timed Practice for each class determined the ranking.

In MX2 Tyla Rattray grabbed his first pole since the 2005 Grand Prix of the Netherlands. The South African holds a slender advantage by just a tenth of a second over the Kawasaki-mounted Pourcel brothers. David Philippaerts was 5th, Marc de Reuver was 14th and Carl Nun struggled with the revised qualification format to place 23rd.
