SIMEON DOMINATES GSX-R CUP OPENER
23 April 2006 - Suzuki Racing
Belgian Xavier Simeon rode a superbly controlled race at Valencia today to win the opening round of this year’s Suzuki GSX-R European Cup.
He had dominated qualifying, taken pole position and today was totally in control throughout the 11-lap race. He was never headed throughout the race and took the chequered flag two-and-a-half seconds ahead of his nearest rival. Second went to Austrian Rene Mahr ahead of Spanish ‘wild card’ Ismael Ortega, who was not eligible to score points, so third went to another Spaniard, Salvador Cabana, with German Phillip Hafeneger fourth ahead of Swiss rider Gregory Junod. Xavier Simeon - 1st: '' I am so happy because this has been a perfect day and the weekend has also been perfect because I won the Superstock 600 European Championship race yesterday. After qualifying, I knew that I had a very good chance of winning the Suzuki GSX-R Cup race today and nobody was going to stop me. My bike worked perfectly today and I want to thank my team for giving me such a good bike and great support. Once I was in front, I just ran my own pace and kept an eye out for my nearest challengers. I was able to pull out a gap on the rest of the field and then I just rode as fast as I needed to for the victory.'' GSXR-Cup Results: 1 Simeon, 2 Mahr, 3 Cabana, 4 Hafeneger, 5 Junod, 6 Castellani. Championship Points: 1 Simeon 25, 2 Mahr 20, 3 Cabana 16, 4 Hafeneger 13, 5 Junod 11, 6 Castellani 10.
