BLACK BEAR GEARS UP FOR DRAG RACE DOUBLE
03 June 2004 - Harley-Davidson UK
Black Bear Harley-Davidson and local drag racer Chris Stebbings have renewed their winning partnership in a bid to secure the 2004 ACU British Championship in Top Fuels Supertwins and win their second title in consecutive years.
After celebrating gold medal success in last year’s championship, Chris, who works part time for the East Anglia dealership building customised Harley-Davidson motorcycles, has teamed up with Black Bear again for a second shot on the title. In 2003 the partnership proved to be an almost unbeatable combination with Chris finishing on top of the podium in every meeting bar one in the series. On his way to victory he also won the Avon Park Championship and the Santa Pod Championship on his motorcycle – a UK built chassis with an engine based on a 1981 Harley-Davidson Ironhead Sportster. Running on a cocktail of nitro and methanol – priced at a costly £45 a gallon and consumed at three gallons to the mile – and riding an older machine than the rest of the field, Chris left his competitors standing to consistently record standing quarter mile times in the eight second bracket. He believes his success amounts to his thorough pre-race preparation and the backing he received from Black Bear Harley-Davidson. Chris said: “Even though my bike is older than the other machines it is strong, consistent and reliable as a result of a thorough and precise set up before each run at the dealership.” Helping Chris in his effort to achieve the impressive double, Black Bear’s general manager Steve Loxton has reaffirmed the dealership’s backing of the drag racer. “Drag racing is an exciting and intoxicating sport which is followed by a lot of our customers,” said Steve. “We are delighted to support Chris in the defence of his championship in 2004.” The Harley-Davidson range starts with the Sportster XL883 at £5,195 and includes the multiple award-winning V-Rod at £14,095.
