KIRKHAM’S TOP TEN QUALIFYING COMES AT A PRICE
19 April 2006 - Jon Kirkham

Jon Kirkham’s top ten qualifying position came at a price after a huge crash at the end of the session left him with an ankle injury that slowed his race pace at the Thruxton circuit.

Kirkham gradually improved his speed through qualifying setting the 10th fastest time only to have a huge crash the following lap which destroyed his Suzuki GSX-R and injured his ankle in the progress. Speaking after the incident he said that everything was going really well until the off.

“I felt really good through qualifying and the Suzuki was set-up to my liking. I gradually upped the pace and set a really good time only to come off the following lap. I’ve managed to injure my ankle and do a fair bit of damage to the bike in the process.”

The Jentin Racing team worked through the night to re-build the bike in time for race-day eventually getting the Suzuki ready by 4am on the Monday.

Race one saw Kirkham enjoy a battle with Plater, Clarke and Buckingham for a top 15 result with the Derbyshire rider finishing just outside the points at race end.

The second race was also a see-saw contest for the final points with Buckingham again in the mix with Chris Martin. Kirkham’s ankle injury compromised his race though and he finished sixteenth.

Kirkham said he was disappointed that once again an injury had curtailed what had been a very promising start to the weekend.

“The Jentin Racing team did really well to get my bike back together for today but my ankle wasn’t right and gave me a fair bit of grief in both races. The best I could do was fight for the odd point today which is really disappointing.

Last week I was taken out and ended up with concussion, this time my weekend was spoilt by the qualifying crash. The only thing to do now is get the ankle sorted for Oulton Park.”

The next round of the British Superbike Championship is at Oulton Park, Cheshire on May 1.
