1250GP SERIES SET FOR THRILLING ACTION
25 August 2004 - Honda Racing

The British 125GP Championship is set up nicely for some thrilling action in the last three rounds – starting at Cadwell Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

Red Bull Rookies Honda’s Eugene Laverty has had a season-long battle with Christian Elkin in the Honda RS125-dominated series.

Despite achieving four pole positions and four race victories, Laverty trails Elkin by 12 points. With 25 points for a win, the 18-year-old Ulsterman is in easy reach of the championship leader and, after winning the last round at Croft, is the rider in form.

It was a superb performance from the Toomebridge teenager. He set the pole position time in qualifying and battled with six other riders during the inaugural British Championship round at the north Yorkshire circuit. A cool head helped him maintain his advantage right to the chequered flag.

Laverty has only failed to finish one race in the 13-round series and his consistency may well prove to be decisive. He will again benefit from the support of Red Bull Rookies Honda who will be competing on its home circuit, close to the team’s base at Louth in Lincolnshire.

Laverty’s team-mate Steven Neate will be trying to help him during the remaining three races. The 17-year-old Barton-le-Clay rider achieved his first, front row qualifying position of the season at Croft. However, a jump-start and the resultant ride-through penalty effectively ended all hopes of standing alongside Laverty on the podium.

Eugene Laverty (2nd = 167 points ): “It was great to be back on the top step of the podium at Croft and I know that I need to do the same again at Cadwell Park if I’m going to reel Elkin in and challenge for the championship. The Red Bull Rookies Honda RS125 goes really well at the circuit, so I just need to qualify well and ride for a win.”

Steven Neate (11th = 51 points): “I’m determined to get my season back on track at Honda Racing’s home round at Cadwell Park. The last few rounds have been frustrating but I am still focused on achieving the best finishes possible for Red Bull Rookies Honda. Besides, I also want to support Eugene in his challenge for the title.”
