Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP Championship Race Leading Into Dallas

Fresh off a two week break, Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series fires up at Dallas’ Texas Stadium Saturday, April 22. Tied at 308 points, Ricky Carmichael, 26, and James Stewart, 20, will use Dallas at the rubber match for the hotly contested Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP championship.

Kawasaki’s Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., has won the last three races in dominant fashion and has eight Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP wins. Carmichael, of Tallahassee, Fla., is the defending Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series champion and owns six wins on the season. The points race for Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP will be decided at the finals in Las Vegas May 6 as these two fierce competitors spend the next three races sorting out the championship

“I know James (Stewart) has won three races in a row (this season) and I have two (in a row),” said Carmichael. “I guess we split AMA wins; he’s got six and I’ve got six and we’re tied for the FIM points. So, it’s fun and it’s what everybody wants too see. I’m glad to be a part of it.”

Carmichael has six wins in the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series and has a 12-point lead over Yamaha’s Chad Reed, while Stewart remains in third place. Consistency has been a major factor in Carmichael’s 2006 season.

“Definitely, he (James) has ridden exceptionally well all year not just these last three races,” said Carmichael after finishing second at Houston. “I think he has put it together these last three races for sure. I’m looking forward to working on getting better at the beginning of the race and being there at the end.

Texas Stadium is a special place for Stewart as he became the first African-American to win an AMA Supercross class race. In the last three races he led 60 of 60 laps and attributes his success to his great starts.

“I have been getting good starts and that’s the one thing that has been helping me,” said Stewart on his three consecutive wins. “I just got up there and rode a good pace. I kept an eye on Ricky and just rode the rest. There was no need for me to push it any harder.”

Yamaha ace Reed, of Dade City, Fla., has been struggling with shoulder injury he suffered the week before the Daytona Beach race. Despite the injury, Reed has procured the number two position in the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series points race.

“It was tough for me to have a good pace,” said Reed after the race in Houston. “Those guys (Ricky and James) are being more aggressive and I just gave up on that. I can’t be as aggressive as I want to be and I just have to let it come to me.”

In the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class, Honda’s Andrew Short of Murrieta, Calif., has a two-point lead over defending Eastern Regional 125cc AMA Supercross champion Grant Langston, of Murrieta, Calif. Langston could join Ernesto Fonseca and James Stewart as the only riders in history to win regional championships on both coasts.

Last year Kawasaki’s Grant Langston, of Murrieta, Calif., extended his season points lead to seven in 125cc Eastern Regional Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series competition, picking up his third win of the season.

This weekend’s race will air on SPEED on Sunday, April 23, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. EST. A tape-delayed, one-hour television broadcast of the AMA Supercross Lites racing will air on SPEED on Sunday, April 29, at 6 p.m. EST.
