SPEEDWAY WEEKLY ROUND UP
18 April 2006 - British Speedway Promoters Association

ELITE LEAGUE LATEST.

ARENA-ESSEX promoter Ronnie Russell said that his club''s Good Friday clashes with close rivals Ipswich were a tremendous advertisement for the sport.

Russell said: ''I brought both teams around on a parade lap for both have helped to produce what I believe was a truly magnificent speedway meeting.

''I''d like to pay tribute to the superb effort of my lads, all of whom gave 110 per cent today.''

BELLE VUE reserve Phil Morris expects to make an immediate comeback for the Aces this week after escaping from a crash last week with no broken bones.

Morris tangled with Wolverhampton''s Christian Hefenbrok after the end of Heat 2 and it was first thought that he had suffered a more serious foot injury.

Aces promoter Ian Thomas said: ''His problem would be getting a boot on but he has a pair that are too big for him so he''ll use one of those on his right foot.''

COVENTRY co-boss Peter Oakes paid tribute to captain Scott Nicholls who got the better of Peter Karlsson in a thrilling bonus point run-off at Wolverhampton on Monday.

Oakes said: ''The run-off was a fair race between two top riders, they passed and inter-passed throughout and I think most of us probably thought it was all over when Peter passed Scott for the second time.

''But it just shows what Scott really is capable of, it was a tremendous race and at least we''ve gone home with three points out of five. If we keep doing that we won''t be far off the play-offs.''

EASTBOURNE promoter Jon Cook says he is ''gutted'' for Australian star Adam Shields who received serious leg injuries in a crash in Poland on Monday.

Cook said: ''We wish Adam all the best in his recovery, it couldn''t have come at a worse time for him and we were so pleased with his start to the season.

''I''m personally gutted for him and we will do everything we can to support him, we do intend to hold a collection for him soon.''

IPSWICH boss Mike Smillie wants to see more consistency from the top end of his team, believing that the Witches are short of heat winners.

Smillie said: ''We are not getting enough race winners, and this is something we must work on.

''There is a long way to go, though, and we are not overly concerned by our results. We could have done without the home defeat by Reading but otherwise we are satisfied.''

OXFORD promoter Aaron Lanney says he will continue to monitor riders'' form having brought Todd Wiltshire and Freddie Eriksson in following Tony Rickardsson''s departure.
Lanney said: ''Our season starts at home against Coventry next Wednesday and I expect us to put on a good display that night. I have said to the guys that we now have to start winning our home meetings.

''The rest of the guys will benefit from Todd''s experience, and I have a few matches before the first set of green sheets to see if the squad are up to the task.''

PETERBOROUGH boss Trevor Swales says that the Panthers'' loan signing of Jesper B Jensen is paying rich dividends after the Dane scored a paid maximum against Swindon.
Swales said: ''He is one of the most consistent riders around, and I don''t believe Jesper gets the credit he deserves for his performances.

''I think he is one of the most under-rated riders in the Elite League and he has already demonstrated why we moved so quickly to secure his return.''

POOLE manager Neil Middleditch has given his backing to reserve Daniel Davidsson, who he believes can be a trump card for the Pirates this season.

Middleditch said: ''We know he has got it, it is just a case of getting him to produce it every week.

''When he hits form he is great, but he just needs to be more forceful on the first corner.''

READING manager Jim Lynch wants his side to keep up their winning momentum
when they face his old club Peterborough at Smallmead this week.

Lynch said: ''Everyone will think it''s a foregone conclusion and be expecting us to beat them as we won at their place a few weeks ago. But that shouldn''t detract from the fact that they are still a very good side.

''This meeting is another potential banana skin for us, and we must be right on our game to make sure we get the right result.''

SWINDON boss Alun Rossiter hopes his side get to take revenge on Reading later in the season after the Bulldogs dumped his Robins out of the Cup.

Rossiter said: ''Reading are a good experienced team and I believe this meeting came to early for us.

''We need some of the guys to settle in and I believe we will push them hard later in the season. We are out of the Cup and now we need to concentrate on the League.''

WOLVERHAMPTON''S young doubling-up reserve William Lawson said that his paid twelve score against Coventry was his best-ever meeting in the sport.

Lawson said: ''It was especially nice because of the fact that it was in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

''I like it here and it''s all a great experience for me, the track is well prepared and I''m proud to be riding for Wolves. It can only be good for me and I feel I''m learning a lot from riders like Peter Karlsson and Billy Hamill.''

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST..

BERWICK promoter Peter Waite continues to be frustrated by his team''s under-achievement so far this season after a heay defeat at Workington.

Waite said: ''Lee Smethills and Andreas Bergstrom pulled their weight, but it''s a heavy weight to tug for 15 races without much support. It was a disappointing evening''s work on behalf of a lot of our side I''m sorry to say.''

EDINBURGH skipper Theo Pijper is satisfied with his start to the campaign, and now hopes that all of his Monarchs team-mates can strike top form.

Pijper said: ''All the rain-offs have been frustrating, but apart from that I feel pretty good. I did make a mistake with my choice of bike at Newcastle but that''s a decision you make on the day.''

GLASGOW co-promoter Stewart Dickson says that the Tigers'' home crowds have been highly encouraging so far this season.

Dickson said: ''What makes it very pleasing is that the number of home supporters and new faces in the stands is definitely up. We must look to continue hitting the message home as the weather starts to get brighter and warmer.''

THE Isle of Wight have dropped Robert Kasprzak in favour of Jason Bunyan with co-promoter Dave Pavitt saying he had to act after a run of heavy away defeats.

Pavitt said: ''We still feel that Robert has a future in this country, but we simply had to strengthen the side.''

KING''S LYNN are hoping for a crowd of around 3,000 as they stage the British Under-21 Championship at the Norfolk Arena on Wednesday.

Co-promoter Jonathan Chapman said: ''We are expecting our biggest crowd for some time. There is a lot of interest in the meeting, especially with there being riders from Mildenhall, Rye House, Sheffield and Scunthorpe.''

MILDENHALL promoter Mick Horton was pleased with the way his side pushed Rye House over the Easter wekeend, and said that two points out of five was the least they deserved after a ten-point defeat on Monday.

Horton said: ''We''re obviously very frustrated and I think the scoreline flattered Rye House. It proved there''s nothing between the sides even though we had too many riders not really gelling.''

NEWCASTLE boss George English believes the Diamonds still have a chance of progressing in the Premier Trophy - if they can pull off a win at Workington.

English said: ''Our win over Glasgow was a much improved team performance, and a crucial match for us to win. We''re now turning our attentions to Workington away, and we need to win there.''

NEWPORT promoter Tim Stone is looking for consistent form from his team as they start their Premier League campaign against Edinburgh on Sunday.

Stone said: ''What we had on Sunday was everyone scoring points, but not necessarily reaching their peak. Everyone is determined and is putting in the effort, but I''m sure there is more to come.''

REDCAR team boss Brian Havelock says that the Bears will be up to speed when the Premier League gets underway.

Havelock said: ''The Premier Trophy is a starting gate for everyone. We started late but we should be getting it together by the time the League fixtures begin.''

RYE HOUSE team manager John Sampford believes that Ross Brady is the ideal man to replace broken wrist victim Stuart Robson.

Sampford said: ''Ross has exactly the same average as Stuart right down to the decimal point. He had a nine-point home average with Edinburgh last year and almost seven away, so he is an impressive performer.''

SHEFFIELD promoter Neil Machin says that aggregate bonus points will be crucial in determining which two clubs qualify for the Premier Trophy semi-finals.

Machin said: ''We have to continue piling on the bonus points and we will be looking to win at least one of our remaining away matches.''

SOMERSET boss Mick Bell is frustrated by the fact that the Rebels have so far been unable to replicate their strong home showings on the road.

Bell said: ''We need to start looking at our away performances. I''m not faulting the effort of the lads but we have to show an improvement when we''re on our travels.''

STOKE were involved in the first dead heat of the season when Paul Clews and Redcar''s Richard Juul tied during the Potters'' six-point win over Redcar on Saturday.

Stoke manager John Adams said: ''We are not firing on all cylinders yet, but there are plenty of positive signs.''

WORKINGTON promoter Graham Drury said that skipper Garry Stead had a vital influence on the Comets team as they won at Edinburgh despite losing Paul Thorp in his first ride.

Drury said: ''Garry rallied the lads, got us all together and told us we had to go out there and win it despite losing Thorpy. I think it underlines what a good team we have this season.''
