SUPERSPORT CROWN BECKONS FOR KING KARL
25 August 2004 - Honda Racing
Karl Harris has once again proved to be the dominant force in British Supersport racing.
The HM Plant Honda Racing star has emerged as the leading championship contender for the second consecutive year. As in 2003, the 24-year-old Yorkshireman could clinch the title at Cadwell Park – with two rounds to spare. It would be particularly satisfying if the CBR600RR rider could win the Supersport crown on his team’s home track in Lincolnshire. With four pole positions, five race victories and another four podium finishes, Harris has been a model of consistency in 2004. He has quite simply been in a class of his own on the all-conquering HM Plant Honda. A 52-point gap at the top of the championship accurately reflects Harris’s dominance. After a poor start in the last round at Croft, Harris powered through the pack to finish third behind the Padgetts Hondas of Jay Vincent and Leon Camier. Harris will win the British Supersport Championship if he finishes ahead of nearest challenger Michael Laverty in the 11th round of the series. He won the corresponding event last season and has been widely predicted to retain his title. Billy McConnell will make a second appearance on the Red Bull Rookies Honda CBR600RR in place of the injured Jonathan Rea. The talented 17-year-old Australian benefited from his team-mate’s experience at Croft, where he made his Supersport debut in only his first year of road racing. A championship point for 15th place was just reward for a valiant effort and he will be hoping to repeat that performance with a top-15 finish in front of the huge Bank Holiday crowd. Karl Harris (1st = 197 points): “Testing at Cadwell last week went really well and I’m looking forward to the race. We always get good support because it’s the team’s local event. I’m just going to concentrate on winning – the same as I always do – and it would be fantastic to claim the championship here for the second year in a row.” Billy McConnell: “I like Cadwell Park and enjoyed testing there. It’s quite a tight and twisty track but the atmosphere is great. I’m looking forward to getting back on the Red Bull Rookies Honda CBR600RR again. My aim is for another points finish.”
