WOLVERHAMPTON SPEEDWAY UPDATE
17 April 2006 - Wolverhampton Speedway
WOLVERHAMPTON gained revenge over neighbours Coventry for their Good Friday defeat with a 53-40 home win on Monday - but missed out on the aggregate bonus point. Peter Karlsson, unbeaten in his five rides during the 15 heats of a spectacular Elite League showdown, lost a run-off with Coventry counterpart Scott Nicholls for the extra point after the sides finished level 93-93 on aggregate. Wolves would have been happy simply to collect the win on the night, but a dramatic Heat 12 when Scott Nicholls failed to beat Ronnie Correy and William Lawson from a 15-metre handicap as a tactical substitute put the home side in control. Nicholls was involved in some of the most dramatic racing of a thrilling night which brought out the best in British Speedway. He took Billy Hamill to the fence in fine style in Heat 4 with a ruthless move which was hard but fair to keep his side in the hunt. The Bees always looked like keeping the scores close but William Lawson, who has made a big impression in his doubling-up role between Edinburgh and Wolves, teamed up with maximum-man Peter Karlsson for a shock 5-1 in Heat 10 to extend the lead to six. After Nicholls'' Heat 12 misfortune Wolves piled on the points in a thrilling Heat 13 with Karlsson and Billy Hamill getting the better of Chris Harris, who was nominated as a tactical ride, and a frustrated Nicholls at the back. Rory Schlein kept the bonus point battle alive with a Heat 14 win as a tactical ride over Freddie Lindgren and the impressive Lawson. Karlsson duly completed his maximum in the Heat 15 decider for the bonus but partner Hamill was squeezed out in the first turn and trailed in last which meant a run-off for the aggregate win. This time Nicholls made up for his earlier disappointments with a stunning race-off win over Karlsson in a race where both riders swapped places throughout the four laps. WOLVES: Peter Karlsson 15, Billy Hamill 10+1, William Lawson 9+3, Freddie Lindgren 9, Ronnie Correy 7+1, Christian Hefenbrock 3+1, Magnus Karlsson ill. COVENTRY: Rory Schlein 12+1, Scott Nicholls 11, Billy Janniro 7+1, Chris Harris 6, Oliver Allen 3, Morten Risager 1+1, Troy Batchelor 0.
