HOME ROUND FOR HONDA RACING
25 August 2004 - Honda Racing
The 11th round of the British Superbike Championship on Bank Holiday Monday is a special event for HM Plant Honda Racing.
The Louth-based team’s headquarters is only a short distance from the Lincolnshire circuit and Honda will benefit from a mass of support from the expected 30,000 fans. The two races of the British Superbike Championship will see another showdown between HM Plant Honda Racing’s Michael Rutter and championship leader John Reynolds. Rutter is 50 points behind his biggest rival with three rounds (six races) remaining in what has already been a dramatic season. Rutter (31) from Leicestershire, notched up his first double win in the series in the last round at Croft in North Yorkshire. It was the first time that a British Superbike round had been held at the picturesque venue and the record crowd was given much to entertain them. HM Plant Honda Racing has been concentrating on supplying Rutter and team-mate Ryuichi Kiyonari with a race-winning package in the shape of the HRC-prepared CBR1000RR. All the hard work has certainly paid off and Rutter is confident of another good result aboard the Michelin-shod factory Fireblade. Kiyonari has also been able to impress with his own double – two fourth places at Croft – and his performance has shown a marked improvement in the second half of the season. The 21-year-old British Superbike rookie will be a strong ally to the determined Rutter in the Englishman’s quest for championship glory. Michael Rutter (2nd = 312 points): “I really need to win both races again at Cadwell Park if I’m to stand any chance of catching John [Reynolds] before the end of the season. It’s quite a difficult track but the support of all of the team’s local fans will hopefully spur me on. Testing at the circuit has gone well and I’ve just got to remain focused on victory.” Ryuichi Kiyonari (6th = 150 points): “I enjoyed testing at Cadwell Park and this weekend I am hoping to ride like I did at Mallory Park and Croft. I feel comfortable with the HM Plant Honda Racing CBR1000RR Fireblade; the tyres have been working well and the team is helping a lot by giving me an excellent set-up. It will be good to finish on the podium but I also want to help Michael to win again.”
