TREBLE TOP FOR AIRWAVES DUCATI
16 April 2006 - Airwaves Ducati
Airwaves Ducati secured first and third place on the grid at Thruxton today, making it 3 pole positions out of 3 for the team.
Leon Haslam completed the circuit’s fastest ever lap on two wheels, with a time of 1:14.626, to take pole position for tomorrow’s race. Team mate Gregorio Lavilla will start the race in third, having set a best time of 1:15.219. In the early stages of qualifying Haslam and Lavilla switched the top two places frequently. Haslam took a grip on the lead when setting his best time on lap 18. A red flag with 6 minutes to go resulted in a frantic re-start followed by another red flag 5 minutes later with only a minute left in the session. However nobody was able to better Haslam’s time and the only rider to be on terms with the Airwaves Ducati duo was Karl Harris, who finished in 2nd place, just 0.034 ahead of Lavilla. After qualifying Gregorio was not completely satisfied with how things had gone saying, “It was not the kind of session that I expected. At the start my race bike had a problem so I had to switch bikes and my spare bike was not exactly how I would have liked it. It was not the best qualifying for me, but we are on the front row.” Leon Haslam was very positive about the race saying, “I am really happy with pole position, the Airwaves Ducati was on rails and I am excited as I feel like there is much more to come for the race.” When asked about being the only rider to go sub 1 minute 15 seconds around the circuit he simply said, “I am well happy with that!” The Airwaves Ducati riders will line up for two 22 lap races tomorrow (Monday April 17th) in round three of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship.
