BRITISH SUPERBIKES BLAST INTO OULTON PARK FOR ROUND FOUR OF 2006
13 April 2006 - MotorSport Vision
Lavilla, Byrne, Kiyonari and Haslam ready to do battle in Cheshire
The Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire will host the fourth round of this year’s Bennetts British Superbike Championship on 1 May, with the title battle sure to be finely balanced after an exciting first three events. In the opening rounds of the series, reigning champion Gregorio Lavilla has proved he is still the man to beat on his Airwaves Ducati, winning two of the first four races before declaring that he can go faster still with a few tweaks on his bike. The Spaniard hasn’t had it all his own way, however, with HM Plant Honda’s ace Ryuichi Kiyonari hot on his heels. The Japanese has also stepped on to the top of the podium already this season, and is proving to be quick out of the box just as he was last year, although he has also visited the gravel traps too. Leon Haslam and Karl Harris, team-mates to Lavilla and Kiyonari respectively, have also showed they have plenty of speed and commitment, and they will be pushing hard for race wins and don’t discount ex-Moto GP star Shane Byrne, making his BSB comeback with Rizla Suzuki. The circuit is a favourite among riders and spectators alike thanks to its technically challenging layout and leafy, picturesque setting. Lavilla comments: “Oulton Park has one of the best layouts in the BSB championship and as a track I like it.” Last year, Oulton Park produced one of the closest finishes in BSB history, with Lavilla leading around the final corner, only to be pipped across the line by Kiyonari by a mere 0.004s. The year before, Oulton was the scene of a dramatic fireball incident, when Vince Whittle’s Ducati exploded having ruptured a fuel line in an accident. Discounted advance tickets for the BSB round at Oulton Park, which will feature two exciting races for the main championship plus a host of support race categories, are available by calling 0870 950 9000 or visiting www.oultonpark.co.uk. Tickets cost £26 (£25 online) for the weekend or £21 (£20 online) for raceday. Children aged 12 and under go free.
