BENNETTS GIVES ‘GOOD’ ADVICE TO BIKERS THIS EASTER
14 April 2006 - Bennetts
Thousands of motorcyclists are expected to take to the roads from Good Friday over the Easter Bank Holiday, which is traditionally the start of the motorcycling season.
With this is mind, Bennetts, the UK’s number one for motorcycle insurance, and Bikesafe* wish to remind bikers to check their motorcycles and equipment are in excellent condition before taking to the open road this weekend. Significant numbers of bikers will have put their motorcycles away for the winter and will be dusting down their leathers and heading for the open road to take advantage of the long weekend and milder weather. Bennetts, in support of Bikesafe*, has compiled a checklist which gives advice on their machine, equipment and rider proficiency. Bikers to check the following in particular, are all in first-rate condition: Brakes and fluid Tyre condition and pressures (check when cold) Oil Coolant Chain and sprockets Lights Equipment At the first sign of warmer weather, 39%** of bikers leave their leather trousers at home wearing jeans instead, and 21%** ride without a leather jacket. Bennetts wishes to stress that protective clothing is a must regardless of the weather. In particular, a riders’ helmet is the most important piece of equipment. Bikers need to pay attention for helmet webbing and scratched visors, the latter of which can affect a riders vision efficiency at night or in wet weather. Rider proficiency It is imperative that riders regularly practice machine and road management skills after a long period without riding and re-familiarising with the controls and handling their bike is essential. Inevitably, riders’ skills are often rusty following a long winter break and Bennetts are keen to stress that bikers may require a few weeks back in the saddle to resume a competetent skill level. PC Philip Edwards, National Bikesafe Co-ordinator, said: “Huge numbers of bikers will be heading out this weekend for the first time this year and I would urge them to make certain their bike is in good working order and to exercise caution, ensuring they are safe on the roads this Easter.” Managing Director of Bennetts, Kal Samra, said: “We want bikers to enjoy the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. Reminding bikers to thoroughly check their bike and equipment to make sure its in excellent condition before going out this weekend ensures they are fully prepared for what is going to be a busy weekend on the roads.”
