HEAVY KNOCK PREMATURELY ENDS WEEKEND FOR KIRKHAM
11 April 2006 - Jon Kirkham

Jon Kirkham’s weekend ended prematurely following a huge crash at the start of the first race left him with concussion at a rain soaked Donington Park.

It was a case of ‘what might have been’ for Kirkham after a very strong first qualifying saw him just outside the top ten. A mechanical failure towards the end of the second qualifying on the Saturday at the Leicestershire circuit meant he was unable to take any further part in the session though he still finished a very respectable 14th quickest.

Speaking after the incident Kirkham was reasonably happy despite the setback.

“Qualifying was going well and I was on target for a time probably just outside the top ten when something let go on the bike down the start/finish straight while flat-out. It was a real struggle to reign it in but I managed to hang-on. Being so late in the session a few other riders got past me so I’m reasonably happy to be inside the top 15.”

The heavens well and truly opened for the first event at the newly re-vamped circuit with the heaviest rain many could remember. On the first corner of the first race Kirkham was involved in a huge five rider pile-up following a highside by Tommy Hill.

Kirkham saw Hill come off in front of him and was then hit by another rider hard enough to completely destroy his helmet. It was a disappointing early end to what was looking like a good weekend.

“I saw Tommy come off which set of a bit of a chain reaction. I got clouted by someone else and hit my head hard enough to destroy the helmet and do a fair bit of damage to the bike. The end result being that I ended up with concussion and wasn’t able to start the second race.”

With just over a week to go to the next round at Thruxton over the Easter weekend Kirkham expects to be fully fit.

“I was gutted after what happened in the first race. To end the day having not even completed a lap is upsetting but I’ll be fine for Thruxton which I’m really looking forward to.”
