MAG WITHDRAWS SUPPORT
10 April 2006 - MAG UK

MAG has withdrawn its support of the UKIP meeting on the European Licensing Directive set for April 23 in Salisbury.

The decision follows a vigorous debate at the group’s annual conference.

While MAG’s stance on the Directive is unaltered, grave reservations concerning this tangible association with UKIP swayed the vote on a motion to withdraw MAG’s official support from the event.

MAG President Ian Mutch said, “From the outset members of MAG’s National Committee were concerned that we might prejudice our long-standing party political neutrality by association with an initiative by one party. On balance, concern over the licensing directive overwhelmed our reservations but the members expressed their apprehensions and exercised the groups open democracy.

Between annual conferences MAG’s national committee directs the group’s policies and tactics but we are constitutionally equipped to bow to the members’ wishes and that’s what we’ve done.”

MAG therefore continues its call to all political parties to oppose the motorcycle licensing and testing regime contained in the 3rd European Driving Licence Directive.

Other decisions: The major decision of the 34th Annual conference was the election of a new Chairman. Jane Chisholm, a schoolteacher from Yorkshire and former Yorkshire Regional Rep is now the Group’s National Chairman.

Jane said, “I am encouraged by the emphatic endorsement of the membership and will do my best to take the group to new levels of effectiveness. The surveillance age poses the most serious threat ever to the fun of motorcycling and MAG has to meet that challenge with a mixture of sophisticated argument allied to robust defiance. We’ve never been better equipped to defend motorcycling and look to all riders to support us with full individual membership.”
