Red Bull KTM rider Sebastien Tortelli posted the 3rd fastest lap during Timed Practice as the 2006 FIM World Championships commenced under windy and showery conditions in Belgiumfor the Karcher Grand Prix of Flanders at the Zolder circuit today.

The sodden sandy dirt became rough after the morning practice sessions and morphed into a demanding and difficult terrain. The former World Champion was only a second behind pole position man Stefan Everts after setting a steady pace throughout the period. Despite a run-in with team-mate Jonathan Barragan Mickael Pichon was able to place 7th while the Spaniard, who is nursing an injured wrist was 16th quickest.

In MX2 Tyla Rattray was victorious once more in the second qualification heat repeating his win from 2005. The South African benefited from a mistake by team-mate Marc de Reuver, who had led the majority of the 20 minute and 2 lap heat and eventually finished 5th. David Philippaerts was constantly fighting among the front group and sealed 2nd spot for a Champ KTM 1-2. The fourth member of the team, Carl Nunn, started brightly in the first heat but dropped back to cross the finish line in 7th.

Rattray and Philippaerts will take to the gate 2nd and 4th for the Grand Prix motos tomorrow.
