WATANABE ON JAPAN SUPERBIKE POLE
02 April 2006 - Suzuki Racing

Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s Atsushi Watanabe set pole position for the opening round of the All Japan Superbike Championship first round at Twinring, Motegi with MotoGP test rider Kousuke Akiyoshi third.

Watanabe, who is also racing in the ST600 class, smashed his own lap record under hot but windy conditions.

He said: “This year I am entering two classes and I rode ST600 first today so it was a good warm-up. I aimed for new record-lap but the winds were a little bit harder than yesterday. But I’m happy for this result. Most important is the race and I would like to win.”

Qualifying Results: 1 Atsushi Watanabe (Yoshimura Suzuki), 2 Kazuki Tokudome (Honda), 3 Kousuke Akiyoshi (Yoshimura Suzuki), 4 Tatsuya Yamaguchi (Honda), 5 Katsuyuki Nakasuga (Yamaha).
