KIRKHAM LOOKING FORWARD TO SEASON OPENER
20 March 2006 - Jon Kirkham
Jon Kirkham’s 2006 British Superbike Championship preparations continue to gather momentum following an extended test at the Snetterton circuit over the weekend.
The official Superbike pre-season outing was held in dry but very cold conditions at the Norfolk circuit. Kirkham and the Jentin Racing squad didn’t put many laps in on the Saturday with the young Derbyshire rider using the day to gradually increase the pace. “The first session on the Saturday morning was really cold and I only circulated twice. A number of riders went down and it was the last thing I wanted to have happen a week before the season starts. At lunchtime we completed around 10 laps and we did the same late in the day.” With warmer weather on Sunday the times began to tumble with Honda mounted Ryuichi Kiyonari setting the fastest time of the weekend in the morning session. In the second session a number of riders recorded their quickest laps including Kirkham who broke the one minute seven second barrier with a 1: 07: 758. This saw Kirkham finish the weekend ninth fastest overall - a result he said reflected how the team were progressing. “This is the first test we’ve had with a number of other riders out on track and was a good opportunity to gauge our progress. You can never read too much into this sort of thing but I think to be in the top 10 is a good measure of how much work everyone has put in. The real test though will be this weekend.” Looking forward to the season opening round at Brands Hatch this weekend Kirkham said it had been the best pre-season preparation of his career. “The partnership with Jentin Racing is working really well. The Suzuki GSXR is quick and we’ve taken every possible opportunity to go testing. After such a long lay-off with injury last year it is exactly the sort of build-up I needed. I am really looking forward to Brands Hatch now which will be my first race since Cadwell last August.” The 2006 British Superbike Championship gets underway at the Brands Hatch circuit in Kent on Friday 24th March.
