SNETTERTON KICKS OFF 2006 SEASON WITH BIKE RACING THIS WEEKEND
20 March 2006 - MotorSport Vision

Packed year of action ahead on two and four wheels

This weekend, Snetterton circuit’s race season gets under way, and one of the busiest motor racing venues in Britain is set to host races for cars or bikes almost every weekend from March until October. Highlights of the 2006 calendar include the Bennetts British Superbike Championship in June and Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship in August, as well as British Formula 3 and GTs, which return to the Norfolk circuit in July. The first meeting of the year provides bike racing from the British Motor Cycle Racing Club, where capacity grids are expected and some of East Anglia’s top national and club riders will be contesting rounds three and four of the new-look BMCRC/MRO Championships.

King’s Lynn racer Peter Baker will start as favourite for this season’s Powerbike Championship. Having just missed out on the 2005 title, his aim for the coming season is to take the championship. In the Forza Xtreme races, Jamie Newman, from Cambridge, Jon Buckenham, from Lowestoft, Stephen Segasby, from Fakenham, Larry Halliday and Shaun Houston, both from Norwich and Ely’s Andrew Fox should all be on the grid and aiming for the front.

In the Clubman 600 championship, Thetford’s Chris Unstead heads a strong line-up of contenders. The 23-year-old electrician has just taken delivery of a brand new R6 Yamaha and will be looking to use it to take an early championship lead.

In the sidecars, two Norwich crews will be in action - Mike Copsey with Tracey McVaigh and Shaun McVaigh with new passenger Les Chapman. They will be challenged by reigning MRO Super Sidecar champions Sean and Mark Hegarty, from Felixstowe.

Wymondham paramedic Iain Colquhoun and Stuart McGregor will be campaigning their F1 sidecar for the second time. After moving from the F2 division last year, they will want to show their F1 skills on home territory.

The smaller capacity solo groups will field a number of local riders including Mark Sweet, from Attleborough, Wayne Bond, from Wymondham and Ipswich duo George Watson and Den Grant in the Yamaha Past Masters championship. Norwich newcomer Craig Mamo-Jennings will take a place on the grid in the Clubman 400 races.

Practice starts at 9:00am on Saturday and 10:00am on Sunday
