CROFT PRODUCES POSITIVES
17 August 2004 - Triumph ValMoto

Despite another stroke of bad luck, Triumph ValMoto took away a lot of positives from the inaugural British Supersport Championship round at Croft.

Craig Jones recorded lap times two-seconds faster than he has ever previously managed at the track aboard the Triumph Daytona 600.

The team started race day on Sunday 15 August feeling confident after successful qualifying sessions on Saturday. Talented 19-year-old Jones qualified within half a second of pole position at the 2.127-mile North Yorkshire circuit.

The yellow Daytona 600 started from tenth on the grid after dropping down from sixth in the final stages. However, this did not deter Jones in his determined battle for a podium finish.

A slightly slow start left the Triumph ValMoto rider with a lot of work to do but he immediately set about slicing through the opposition. By the first corner, Jones had made up enough time to be back in contention for a front running position. He was at the back of the leading pack in eighth.

Competition at the front of the field was tense with a number of riders dicing for the lead. The tension increased in the ultra-competitive round when race leader Michael Laverty lost control of his motorcycle on lap three.

Unfortunately, lap three also dealt a hand of bad luck to Jones. He was forced to retire from the race to a technical fault with the Daytona 600. This was rustrating for the team, as Jones had been riding well all weekend and felt confident of a strong finish.

Team Manager Jack Valentine said: “We’re devastated because everything was going really well. Craig was riding superbly and the Pirelli tyres were performing well, but that’s the nature of racing - you never know what’s going to happen. It’s been a positive weekend in many ways and that’s what we’re concentrating on. There are still races coming up at circuits where Craig goes well and the season isn’t over yet.”

The team is testing at Cadwell Park this week in preparation for the Supersport event on the following weekend.
