AMP’D MOBILE WORLD SUPERCROSS GP/AMP’D MOBILE AMA SUPERCROSS SERIES ENJOYS BEST SEASON EVER
10 March 2006 - Amp'd Mobile
Solid TV Ratings, Sold-Out Stadiums and Great Racing Take Amp’d Mobile Supercross to the Next Level
After 11 action-packed events, Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series is off to its most successful start in its rich 34-year history. The parity of this year’s racing has resulted in record attendance numbers, record media coverage and unprecedented television numbers. Current AMA Supercross points leader Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., leads reigning AMA Supercross champion Ricky Carmichael, of Tallahassee, Fla., by one point (191-190). In third place, Kawasaki’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., has 174 points, just 17 points out of the lead. Although Stewart is in third place, he still has five wins and is a threat for the title. This entertaining season is being showcased on an array of media platforms, including Amp’d Mobile’s wireless hand sets, CBS Sports, SPEED, Supercross Live! (The season’s weekly webcast), XM Satellite Radio and Podcast. Never has the sport been supported by this many multimedia outlets. “This year we have established a multimedia outreach to our fans that makes keeping up with supercross easier than ever before,” said Ken Hudgens, vice president of marketing and television, Amp’d Mobile Supercross. “We offer fans a variety of information streams that allows them to keep up with the racing, the lifestyle aspect and even an inside look at what goes on behind the scenes. For example, Supercross Live!, our live webcast that had 750,000 listeners in 2005, takes fans inside the post-race press conference so fans can hear the riders break down the race just minutes after the checkered flag drops. Fans can go back and listen to the entire broadcast or simply download it to their iPod; it’s amazing how accessible the sport has become.” In October 2005, Amp’d Mobile Supercross signed the largest television package in the sport’s history with network TV (CBS Sports) and cable TV (SPEED) that would broadcast seven hours of supercross coverage. To date, the average ratings for Amp’d Mobile Supercross on CBS Sports are 1.1 on Nielson Rating scale. The highest rated show of the season scored a 1.4. “Placing the sport on seven hours of network television has been a huge eye opener for our sport,” said Hudgens. “Having supercross broadcast on CBS Sports this season has been a huge next for the sport of supercross. We are excited about the ratings and look forward to working with CBS Sports for years to come.” Live event attendance is at an all-time high with 497,307 fans attending the first 11 races. Traditional sell-outs at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., saw 45,050 fans at the three races. Following the Disney renovation to the stadium in 1998, supercross has sold out in Anaheim 19 of 21 races. Just south of Anaheim, San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium hosted its largest supercross crowd ever, packing in a record 69,005 fans. Supercross races typically rally no less than 60,000 fans at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, but this year a record 70,133 fans watched Ricky Carmichael win his fourth race of the season, which is the first time in history that Amp’d Mobile Supercross has out-performed NASACAR on a race weekend. The following day an estimated 65,000 grandstand tickets were sold at the California Speedway in Fontana for the Auto Club 500 Nextel Cup Race. The capacity is 92,000. The massive crowds embraced a range of star power in 2006 that have included model Cindy Crawford, actress Pamela Anderson, actor Matt LeBlanc, Anderson NASCAR’s Tony Stewart, Casey Kane, Kenny Schrader, pop star Pink, San Francisco Giants’ JT Snow and Cincinnati Reds’ Ken Griffey Jr., just to name a few. The sport presents a unique experience for fans, sponsors, and businesses alike and will continue to do so as its popularity and recognition expand into international markets. Media ranging from television to print have begun to realize the significance of the sport. Meanwhile, companies continue to view the sport as an opportunity to reach a target market difficult to attend to through more traditional means. “This year we have the largest contingent of non-endemic sponsors in the sport’s history, such as Makita, Circuit City, Amp’d Mobile and Toyota,” said Tim Murray, vice president of sales, Amp’d Mobile Supercross. “The hard-to-reach demographic that supercross possesses is very appealing to companies who want to market their product.” Current Points Standings Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP Season Standings 1.
