WOLVERHAMPTON SPEEDWAY
16 August 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association
WOLVERHAMPTON remain on target for a home draw in the play-offs after brushing aside a badly depleted Arena Essex 62-30 at Monmore Green.
The Hammers arrived without three key members of their team - Kelvin Tatum (hip), Josh Larsen (foot) and Greg Walasek (viral infection). But Wolves did a very professional job and offered no mercy to the visitors who now appear to be out of the play-off picture. Mikael Max set the tone for the meeting with a comfortable win in the opening race with colleague Adam Skornicki battling his way past Tomas Topinka for third spot - and from this moment on Wolves never looked troubled. Simon Stead, making only his third appearance of the season in Wolves colours, worked hard to pass Topinka in the next race and he joined Skornicki for the first Wolves maximum of the night. Topinka was, however, a good replacement for Larsen and was good value for his points. He was slightly fortunate to get away with a flying start in Heat 6 and he did enough to hold off both Skornicki and Max. That was after former Wolves man Mark Loram was used as a tactical ride in Heat 5 but he was outpaced by Sam Ermolenko who blasted around the outside in a spectacuolar move down the back straight. It was vintage Ermolenko. Another ex-Wolf, Paul Hurry, was used as a tactical ride in Heat 11 but as if to sum up Arena''s misfortune he trailed in last which meant the move was wasted completely. Max wasn''t risked in Heat 15 for Wolves as he was still feeling the effects of a spectacular crash when helping Sweden to World Cup glory. The impressive David Howe, who had looked sharp all night, was called in alongside Ermolenko as Arena nominated Loram and Hurry. WOLVES: Adam Skornicki 12+1, David Howe 11+1, Simon Stead 10+3, Sam Ermolenko 10+1, Mikael Max 10+1, Freddie Lindgren 9+1. ARENA ESSEX: Mark Loram 13, Toimas Topinka 7, Paul Hurry 5, Dean Barker 3, Leigh Lanham 2, Steve Masters 0.
