SHEFFIELD SPEEDWAY
15 August 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association

NEWCASTLE 52 SHEFFIELD 44THE Pirtek Tigers were unable to open their away Premier League account at Brough Park on Sunday as they went down to an eight-point defeat against the bottom-of-the-table Diamonds.

Rider replacement proved to be an inadequate cover for the injured Andrew Moore as the Tigers gained just two points from the facility. In addition, skipper Andre Compton suffered two engine failures, winning his other two rides. Tigers got off to a good start with a 4-2 in Heat 1 when guest Ross Brady won the race, but the home reserves dominated their respective exchanges with their Sheffield counterparts, and they put Newcastle in front for the first time with a 5-1 in Heat 2. Sheffield managed a 7-2 from a tactical ride win by Compton in Heat 9 but Newcastle gradually pulled away again and finally confirmed their win in Heat 14. Their Australian star Jason Lyons completed a full maximum in Heat 15, although Ricky Ashworth and guest Ross Brady both put in creditable displays for the Tigers. The aggregate bonus point gained by the Tigers could yet prove to be crucial as it has moved them into the all-important eighth place in the Premier League table.
NEWCASTLE: Jason Lyons 15, Richard Juul 9, Lubos Tomicek 7, Jamie Robertson 7, William Lawson 6+2, Lee Dicken 5+1, Kevin Little 3+1.
SHEFFIELD: Ricky Ashworth 15, Ross Brady 10, Andre Compton 9, Richard Hall 5, Ben Wilson 4, James Birkinshaw 1, rider replacement for Andrew Moore.
