The eighth round of the AMA Supercross series headed to Atlanta, GA this past weekend and was the first race back for recently-healed, Jay Marmont. Red Bull KTM rider, Jay Marmont was in the first Lites heat race and got off the line in about fifth place. Jay slipped back to eight position. In heat race 2, Josh Hansen was poised and ready as the young California rider holeshoted the race and cruised to an easy win. The riders lined up for the Lites main, and as the gates dropped, Josh Hansen was out in second, only taking two corners to move him into first until the redflag came out because multiple riders crashed hard in the triple section. All riders were brought back to the starting line and the race was restarted. ''Hanny'' again got a great second place start and hunted the leader, Josh Grant. Hansen went to make a pass and Grant intentionally tried to take Hansen out, but the Red Bull KTM rider remained strong, and continued to stay on Grant’s back wheel. Grant then bobbled and Hansen went for it and passed Grant. Steve Boniface also took advantage and passed both riders, holding the lead for only a moment before he crashed and cart-wheeled his motorcycle into Hansen’s KTM, breaking the shift lever off. Hansen was forced to pull off the track and fix the lever, putting him a lap down and finishing his night in 16th. Jay Marmont put in a valiant effort but had a less than stellar night in his first race back as he crashed hard and pulled out of the race with a DNF. The rest of the field stayed close together through the first lap which cost quite a few of them a top position as one rider fell in the whoops and proceeded to knock down about five guys behind him. One of those riders was the #1 bike of Brett Smith who quickly recovered from the crash and proceeded to charge hard against the rest of the pack. His efforts paid off as he finished in the third place podium position just behind Cole Mattison who had dropped back to second after being passed on the first lap by the eventual winner Jerry Robin from Big Lake, MN. 1.
