CZECH star Mario Jirout took victory in the British Open Indoor Ice Championship at Telford on Sunday - eight years after last winning the event.

Jirout edged out Edward Kennett in a run-off after both riders had tied on 14 points, with Newport''s Tony Atkin third.

Earlier, England beat the Rest of the World 43-35 in the team event, whilst Atkin and Wayne Broadhurst combined to win the Best Pairs.

MARIO Jirout hopes he can use his Telford success to rebuild his British career.

Jirout said: ''I was a little nervous and missed the start in my fifth ride, but I was very happy that in the run-off I made a good one.

''I''d really like to have a team place somewhere in England, I''ve spoken to a few tracks and I am very serious about coming back.''
