Leading tyre manufacturer Avon is to introduce two new tyre sizes to give the ‘tall’ look now sought after by custom bike builders.

The new tyres, a 130/60R23 64V AM41 [front] and 280/40R20 89V AM42 [rear] will be the latest additions to Avon’s top-selling Venom range.

The front 130/60R23 AM41 Venom will be suitable for rims between 3.5 and 4.00 inches, and will have a nominal width of 130mm and an overall diameter of 740mm. The rear 280/40R20 AM42 Venom has been designed for rims between 9.5 and 10.5 inches and will measure 280mm wide, with an overall diameter of 732mm.

The new Venom pairing reflects an emerging trend in the custom market for tyres
that not only show off wheel manufacturers’ latest designs, but which are also true road
tyres, capable of matching the performance potential of the machines to which they are
fitted. Both new tyres are V-rated for speeds of up to 149mph/ 240 kph.

The 280/40R20 is the world’s first 20-inch rear custom tyre. With Aramid belts for added stability, its radial construction means it can be paired with a radial, bias belted or crossply front tyre.

Both front and rear tyres boast special ‘rim protectors’ to help prevent damage to wheels from pot-holes. Usually only seen on top of the range car tyres, the Avon rim protection system has proved to be a welcome feature for riders investing in expensive custom wheels.

Commenting on the new tyres, Avon’s Head of Motorcycle Tyre Sales, Graham Matcham, said, “These tyres have been the subject of a very considered design process to ensure that they are not only proportionally matched for maximum aesthetic effect but are also dynamically compatible for sure-footed performance.”

Major custom builders are already tooling up in anticipation of the new Venoms, which will be on sale from Spring 2006.

The Venom range includes both black and whitewall variants as well as radial tyres for power cruisers such as the Harley Davidson V-Rod and Honda GL1800.

Custom versions of Venom start with an ‘easy-to-fit’ 140/90B16 and extend to the massive 330/30R17 87V Venom-R AM42, suitable for rims between 11.5 and 12.5 inches.

These latest additions join the 300/35R18 88H, 300/40R17 90H, 250/40R18 81H, 200/55R18 79V & 180/55R18 74V Venom-Rs. The Venom-R range also provides a range of fronts which include the Venom-R AM41 120/70R19 60W, 120/70-21 62H, 130/70R18 63H and 150/80R17 72H
