STEWART OUT DUELS CARMICHAEL
11 February 2006 - AMA Pro Racing

Stewart Wins Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series before 69,005 Fans

Short wins second AMA Supercross Lites main event of the season

Kawasaki’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., wins a thrilling Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series main event tonight at Qualcomm Stadium before a near-capacity crowd of 69,005. Honda’s Andrew Short, of Murrieta, Calif., was the Western Region AMA Supercross Lites winner.

Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael, of Tallahassee, Fla., grabbed the Progressive Direct Holeshot Award to start the 20-lap feature, with Stewart settling in behind him to set up a two-rider battle at the front. Carmichael held the slightest of leads the entire race as Stewart patiently waited just a few bike lengths back. Stewart finally made his move on the second to last lap with an inside pass on Carmichael in a 180-degree turn after the first triple jump. Stewart held off Carmichael’s last lap charge to pick up the win, his fifth of the season. Carmichael was second and Yamaha’s Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., finished third.

“Ricky and I had a good battle,” said Stewart. “Throughout the race I sized him up and made my pass. It feels good to ride on a track that has tacky dirt. I knew that after last weekend I had a long way to go. I am three for three in San Diego and this is my favorite stadium.”

KTM’s Mike Alessi, of Apple Valley, Calif., won the Progressive Direct Holeshot Award to start the 15-lap AMA Supercross Lites main event. Short shot to the lead on the opening lap and began to pull away from the field as series points leader Grant Langston, of Clermont, Fla., was working his Kawasaki through the field after a 13th place start. Langston’s inspirational charge ended just a few turns too soon as Short crossed the finish line just 0.837-seconds ahead of Langston for the win. Langston finished second, and KTM’s Nathan Ramsey, of Menifee, Calif., was third.

“I put myself in a good spot of the start,” said Short, who picked up his second win of the season. “If we had one more lap Grant and I would be battling. It’s not over yet, we have two more races and I look forward to this challenge.”

Tonight’s race will air on CBS Sports tomorrow, February 12, 2006 at Noon EST.
