SHEFFIELD SPEEDWAY
12 August 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association

SHEFFIELD PIRTEK TIGERS gained their second successive league win with a 65-26 demolition of struggling Newport at Owlerton on Thursday.

Ricky Ashworth (15) remained unbeaten from his five rides to inspire a solid all-round team performance in difficult conditions - skipper Andre Compton was the top scorer with 17. Newport, to be fair, were without Owlerton specialist Craig Watson who was on his way to Denmark to report for duty in the World Championship qualifier. After three races where the scores were level, Sheffield simply pulled clear with a succession of 5-1 maximums and 4-2''s. The only time Newport stopped the rot was in Heat 13 when Andrew Moore trailed in last for Sheffield to allow a 3-3 draw. Rain started to fall after Heat 4 and there was genuine concern that the meeting wouldn''t go the distance, but to their credit both sides got on with the task in hand. Visiting boss Tim Stone used guest Neil Collins - in for Watson - and Mads Korneliusson as tactical rides but they could do nothing to stop Sheffield''s relentless charge to victory. Korneliusson, who is a bright prospect for the Wasps, was their top scorer with 9. Now Sheffield will start as hot favourites for the aggregate bonus point when the sides meet again in South Wales on August 30.

SHEFFIELD: Andre Compton 17, Ricky Ashworth 15, James Birkinshaw 10+4, Andrew Moore 8+3, Richard Hall 8+1, Ben Wilson 6+3.
NEWPORT: Mads Korneliusson 9, Kristian Lund 5+1, Neil Collins 4+1, Pavel Ondrasik 4, Carl Wilkinson 4, Barrie Evans 0.
