HULL skipper Paul Thorp feels the table-topping Vikings were given a wake-up call in their narrow win over the Isle of Wight.

Thorp said: ''It''s probably the kick up the backside we need to go out and finish the job. It was too close for comfort. ''We''ve lost titles at home before and we don''t want to let it happen again. It would have been disastrous to lose.''

COVENTRY have added 19-year-old prospect Martin Smolinski to their asset base, with the German expected to make his debut at Wolverhampton on August 23. Smolinski is a qualifier for the World Under-21 Final and could join the Bees on a full-time basis next season if he impresses. Joint-boss Peter Oakes said: ''He is a racer, he is totally professional with excellent equipment, and he is a personality as well.''
