PEUGEOT SCOOTERS INCREASE MARKET SHARE IN 2005
02 February 2006 - Peugeot

At 40,092 new registrations, Scooters remain the single largest segment of the UK motorcycle market* with 50cc scooters accounting for 1 in 6 of new bikes sold.

European brands continue to dominate the sales charts – the five most popular moped scooters in 2005 were all either French or Italian. Of those, Peugeot proved the best-performing make, increasing its market share by 6.5% and holding 2nd & 3rd positions in the registration statistics with its Ludix and Speedfight models.

Mopeds have always been popular with younger riders as they can be ridden at 16, a year earlier than they have access to driving a car. Surprisingly, figures from the Peugeot Insurance Scheme indicate that 70% of owners are aged over 18 years and anecdotal evidence from franchised dealers backs this up. Soaring petrol prices, traffic gridlock and limited parking is prompting many families to trade-in the second car for a scooter.

Peugeot attribute their continued success to their flair for innovation. The French company made their first ‘moped’ in 1931 and their Speedfight scooter is widely recognised as defining the ‘sport scooter’ sector when it was launched in 1996.

Peugeot continue to dominate the sports scooter sector, offering riders a choice of three 50cc models; the stunning value Ludix Blaster, with its exceptional power-to-weight ratio; the JetForce, an ultra sports scooter with exceptional handling and braking; and the iconic Speedfight, still selling is huge numbers nearly 10 years after its launch. These scooters provide functional transport with a sporty twist, with prices ranging from £1,349 on the road for the liquid-cooled Ludix Blaster to £1,799 for the JetForce. Running costs are minimal - road tax is just £15 a year (equivalent to £1.25 per month).
