SPEEDWAY 1 ELITE League newcomers Reading have scrapped the traditional Racers nickname - and will now be known as the Bulldogs. A new logo has been designed and club owners BSI are aiming to attract more families to Smallmead. Co-promoter John Poslethwaite said: ''The management team believe this move will help us achieve our ultimate goal of attracting more fans from the Reading area. This is a completely new team racing in the Elite League.'' SPEEDWAY 2 CONFERENCE League bosses have introduced play-offs to decide the 2006 league champions. League leaders at the end of the regular season will go straight to the final to meet the winners of a clash between the second and third places clubs. Conference League co-ordinator Peter Morrish said: ''We''re bringing the league into line with the other leagues. It should provide great interest at the end of the season.'' SPEEDWAY 3 BELLE VUE boss Ian Thomas, the only man to have team managed England to a speedway Grand Slam, has lifted the lid on his 57-year involvement in the sport. In a new book, ''Wheels and Deals'', Thomas looks back on his speedway career, from his days as a novice rider to his stints as promoter with Workington, Newcastle, Hull and Belle Vue, as well as those halcyon England days. Ian has rubbed shoulders with many of speedway''s legendary figures, like Barry Briggs and Ivan Mauger, and has a wealth of stories to tell.
