AUF WIEDERSEHEN BMW MOTORRAD BOXERCUP
12 August 2004 - BMW Motorrad GB
The 2004 season will be the last season for the hugely successful BMW Motorrad BoxerCup well, for the time being anyway.
Since 1999 the big flat-twin twins have delivered close, exciting and spectacular racing. The race-fettled R1100 S BWs have even been as far afield as Daytona where the BoxerCup was held as part of the fringe program of the 200 miles of Daytona. Two very popular replica models for road use based on the race bike have also been available since 2003 in limited edition formats. ''It was clear right from the start that a brand cup has a limited time span, said BMW motorsports director, Berthold Hauser. He then went on to explain the reasons behind the termination of the one-make series at the end of the season. ''We have achieved all our objectives. We have shown how fast the R1100 S can go on the racetrack and have proved the sports-oriented side of our brand to a wider public. The throaty sound of the flat twins and the thrilling duels and battles for position are what got the fans really excited. In previous seasons it was never clear until the final race, who was going to win the series overall. In the 2004 season however, it is difficult to see who can snatch victory from Thomas Hinterreiter but the battle for second and third is still raging between Markus Barth and Stephane Mertens. True to form, this means the 2004 BMW Motorrad International Boxercup will be exciting right up until the final corner of the last race. The BoxerCup will end in its fourth international year on 30 October in Valencia where the race will once again support the Spanish MotoGP (the next race however, will be at Brno in the Czech Republic on 22 August). As part of the MotoGP tour, up to 100,000 spectators each round followed a series of races that were nail-biting, hair-rising and unfailingly exciting. But, to apply a wise old truism, you should quit when you are on top. Currently, it is undecided how BMW Motorrad will continue its motorsports commitment. ''At the moment there are lots of interesting ideas. But there is no rush and above all there is no need to make decisions just yet'', commented motorsports director Hauser.
