LAVERTY WANTS 125GP TITLE
11 August 2004 - Honda Racing
Red Bull Rookies Honda rider Eugene Laverty is convinced that the British 125GP Championship is still within his reach but he knows that he needs a win at Croft if he is going to claim the title for the first time.
The 18-year-old from Toomebridge in Northern Ireland finished third at Mallory Park after leading for more than half of the 24-lap race. It was Laverty’s first podium finish since his home round at Mondello Park in May. Since the last round, the Ulster teenager has also taken part in the British 125 Grand Prix at Donington Park and was the second-highest finishing British rider on the Red Bull Rookies Honda RS125. Laverty and team-mate Steven Neate visited Croft last week and were pleased with their performances. The Red Bull Rookies Honda duo posted some good lap times and were among the fastest 125cc riders on the circuit. Eugene Laverty (2nd = 142 points): “I definitely think that the title is still within reach but I need to start winning again in the next few races if I’m going to reel Elkin in. In testing at Croft last week I was possibly the fastest RS125 on the track. The circuit is a lot like Mondello Park and I went really well there, so I’m confident about my chances.” Steven Neate (10th = 51 points): “We went to Croft for testing last week and it went very well. Eugene and I were up there with the front-runners and there was not much difference between us. I posted some good lap times on the Red Bull Rookies Honda RS125. Things went a lot better for me than they did at Mallory Park and I feel like I’m getting back to good form. I’m feeling positive now about the rest of the season.”
