FIREBLADES BACK IN FIGHTING FORM
11 August 2004 - Honda Racing

Michael Rutter and Ryuichi Kiyonari will travel to Croft this weekend full of fight and determination.

The HM Plant Honda Racing riders are confident and have resolved to score at least top three finishes on the CBR1000RR Fireblades to put their championship challenge back on track.

Leicestershire-based Rutter knows that he faces an enormous task if he is to have any chance of bridging the gap opened by championship leader John Reynolds.

The 31-year-old suffered some unfortunate luck in his home round at Mallory Park and struggled to achieve the results he needed. He finished round nine with a frustrating sixth place and a DNF.

With just four rounds remaining, Superbike veteran Rutter is now concentrating on collecting as many points as possible to consolidate his strong second position in the championship.

While testing for the Suzuka 8-hour race in Japan, Rutter’s team-mate Ryuichi Kiyonari has gone from strength to strength after finding new levels of grip for the potent black and orange Fireblade.

The 21-year-old Japanese rising star sliced through the opposition in both races at Mallory Park to score fourth and third places respectively. In race two he even crossed the line in second after challenging Scott Smart for the lead but the results were decided over two legs following a red flag incident.

Michael Rutter (2nd = 262 points): “I know that I have a lot of hard work to do in the remaining rounds but I’m not ready to give up yet. The beauty of motorcycle racing is that you never know what could happen. Since the last round at Mallory, I’ve been testing Michelin tyres on the HM Plant Honda Racing Fireblade and I’m feeling positive about Croft. The fight for the title is certainly not over yet.”

Ryuichi Kiyonari (6th = 124): “I was much happier with the Michelin tyres I used at Mallory Park and feel very comfortable on the Fireblade now. I am looking forward to visiting another new circuit. The HM Plant Honda is very fast and the team has been working hard to get the set-up right for me. I feel positive about finishing in the top three again for the rest of the season.”
