SPEEDWAY 1 SWINDON have announced the signing of Richie Hawkins as part of their Elite League squad for next season. Hawkins will ride full-time for Workington but rejoins his former club as their number eight. Robins chief Alun Rossiter said: ''I feel this is a good signing for us. Ritchie is not only young and English, but he really came on as a rider for Somerset last year.'' SPEEDWAY 2 COVENTRY will open the defence of their Elite League title with a trip to Elite League newcomers Reading. The Bees, who will be facing their former skipper Greg Hancock, will travel to Berkshire on Monday March 20. Coventry co-boss Colin Pratt said: ''It''s an exciting start to the season and I''m sure there will be a massive amount of interest in the fixture and it should be good TV.''
