BRENT Werner has started 2006 in style with victory in Newport''s New Year Classic.

Werner, who has just completed a move to Eastbourne, beat Coventry''s Chris Harris, Leigh Lanham and Chris Neath in the final after scoring 12-points from five rides.

He said: ''At this time of year, and in this weather, you have to rely on your gating and I just concentrated on making the right moves.''

SPEEDWAY 2

STOKE newboy Mark Lemon has flown home to Australia for a pre-season break - from renovating his house!

Lemon, who is due to have minor surgery on a sinus problem before the season starts, is preparing for his first season with the Potters.

He said: ''I''ve been busy renovating a house and I felt it was important to get in a break before the season starts in March.''
