SPEEDWAY 1 READING have announced the signing of veteran Andy Smith on loan from Belle Vue to replace Danny Bird from their initial line-up. Bird has been ruled out of the Racers'' plans after confusion regarding his average, and is now available for loan. Co-promoter John Postlethwaite said: ''I''ve known Andy for years. He is an experienced campaigner and I''m sure he''ll do a solid job for us.'' SPEEDWAY 2 WORLD No.3 Leigh Adams made a flawless start to the four-round Australian Championship with victory in round one at Gillman. The defending Champion, going for a ninth national title, won his five qualifying races and then the ''A'' Final, and broke the track record for good measure. Todd Wiltshire finished second with Davey Watt completing the rostrum finishers and Adam Shields in fourth place. FIXTURE SUN JAN 8: NEW YEAR CLASSIC at Newport 1pm
