SHEFFIELD SPEEDWAY
09 July 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association

SHEFFIELD Pirtek Tigers managed to protect their long unbeaten home record with hard-fought 52-38 victory over Yorkshire rivals Hull - but the title chasing Vikings snatched the aggregate bonus point in a run-off.

To be fair, a 14-point defeat on the night was harsh on Hull as both teams contributed fully to a hugely entertaining night''s racing in front of a large crowd. Tigers guest Simon Stead, who had earlier broken the Owlerton track record, combined with Andre Compton in the last race after Vikings'' Paul Thorp had been excluded for tape touching to secure the 14-point winning margin. In the process, Stead completed a superb 15-point maximum. It was Compton who got the nod for the run-off, but a fired-up Thorp surged clear at the start and repelled the Tigers skipper for the rest of the race to ensure the Premier League leaders left with a point
SHEFFIELD: Simon Stead 15, Andre Compton 13, Ricky Ashworth 8, Ben Wilson
6+2, Andrew Moore 5+1, Richard Hall 4+1, James Birkinshaw 2.
HULL: Magnus Karlsson 9, Paul Thorp 8+2, Emil Kramer 6+1, Emiliano Sanchez
6+1, Ross Brady 5, Garry Stead 4+1, Joel Parsons 0.
