AMA PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP VISITS THE STURGIS RALLY
09 August 2004 - AMA Pro Racing

The AMA Progressive Insurance Flat Track Championship returns to the Sturgis Rally this year when the series makes a stop at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D., this Tuesday, Aug. 10, for round 10 of the 18-race series.

This race marks the return of the AMA Grand National bikes to the Black Hills Speedway Half-mile, where they last visited the track in 1999.

Defending champion and two-time Black Hills winner, Chris Carr leads the series coming into Tuesday’s race. The five-time AMA Grand National Champion feels good about his chances at Black Hills.

“We’re on bit of a roll right now,” said Carr, who has won a series-leading four races this year, including the last two rounds in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Farley, Iowa, on his Quality Checked Certified Pre Owned Ford-sponsored race bikes. “The crew has the bikes set up really well and I couldn’t ask much more of how things have been going for us of late.”

Carr says there’s always a little extra excitement in the air being a big part of the annual Sturgis Rally that attracts thousands of motorcyclists to area.

“It’s nice to be a part of the rally,” he said. “They always get a good crowd here and people really seem to appreciate the show we put on. We haven’t raced this track for a few years. From what I recall it’s a slippery, blue groove half-mile and that plays right into my hand. Racing in the middle of the week is something a little different, but they could put on a mid-week (race) every week and it wouldn’t bother me. The more the merrier.”

Carr and Rich King each hope to become the first three-time winner at Black Hills Speedway. King won the last AMA Grand National held at the track five years ago. King has one win this season and is coming off a solid third-place result Saturday in his home state of Iowa.

Michigan’s Kevin Atherton is another former winner at Black Hills. He took the victory here in 1996 and comes to Rapid City seeking his first win on the circuit in nearly two years.

In addition to the Grand National, Black Hills Speedway will also host a round of the Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance Series. Christopher Hart, of Farmington, N.Y., holds the lead in that series coming into this week’s race.

The Rapid City round is one of the AMA Grand National races this season that will be televised nationally on SPEED Channel. This event will be taped for a September broadcast. Check local listings for show times.
