BRITISH SPEEDWAY NEWS AND FIXTURES 8.8.04
08 August 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association
SWEDEN retained the World Cup by a single point as the tournament came to a dramatic end at Poole on Saturday night.
The Swedes and Great Britain went into the last race level on 46 points but Peter Karlsson raced clear as GB skipper Scott Nicholls found himself stuck behind Hans Andersen in the early stages. Much-fancied Denmark faded in the second half of the meeting and finished 16 points behind Sweden with Poland in fourth place. JUBILANT Swedish boss Tony Olsson paid tribue to his team after they clinched a second successive World Cup on Saturday. Olsson said: ''It was an amazing performance by the whole team. We started off at Eastbourne not as well as we expected, but we rode well in the Race Off and knew we could be up there tonight. ''The team were fantastic and it''s a great feeling to win it for the second year in a row.'' GREAT Britain had to be content with second place in the World Cup after being edged out by just one point by Sweden. Manager Neil Middleditch said: ''I''m very proud of the boys for getting that close, but naturally am bitterly disappointed. I couldn''t ask any more of any of them.'' Top scorer Mark Loram added: ''Tonight we showed what we can achieve with a full strength squad. Neil has done a terrific job and we couldn''t have asked for more support from him or the BSPA.''
