CARMICHAEL TAKES RECORD 4TH TITLE
27 November 2005 - Suzuki Racing
Team Makita Suzuki''s Ricky Carmichael has been awarded the AMA Pro Racing SPEED Channel Athlete of the Year award - for a record fourth time.
Carmichael, who has won the THQ World Supercross, AMA Supercross, AMA Motocross Championships and was also a member of the USA''s Motocross of Nations-winning squad, was presented with his country''s highest motorcycling accolade in Las Vegas. He said: ''This is amazing. I don''t know if I''m worthy, really. And I know I say it every year, but it''s really going to be hard to beat this year. I know my years are numbered and I''m trying to take every win like it is the last one, but I''ve got a few more years in me and take it as it comes.'' Carmichael, who took home a gold Rolex watch, said of his first season with Team Suzuki: ''The motivation for me was pretty easy as I was on a new bike. Every day we were learning something new about the bike and I even had an unfamiliar feeling this year - I was actually nervous at the first race. ''I''ve got to give it up for Suzuki: I''m happy for myself, but I''m even more proud for you guys,'' added the Floridian, who is the only rider to have won the award four times. AMA Pro Racing Vice President and Director of Communications Kerry Graeber said: ''It was a great night of celebration. It was nice to honour Ricky Carmichael as AMA Pro Racing SPEED Channel Athlete of the Year. Ricky had a remarkable season and added to his already solid legacy among the greatest riders in the history of AMA racing.''
