BMW (UK) LTD LAUNCHES FIRST EVER MOTORCYCLE APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME
24 November 2005 - BMW Motorrad GB

BMW Motorrad UK, in partnership with Hull College, is officially launching its first ever motorcycle apprenticeship scheme. It will take place at the college’s brand new £4.7 million Cannon Street Motor Vehicle Centre, which was officially opened last week.

The college is the first of its kind in the UK to offer the BMW Career Programme Motorcycle Apprenticeship scheme that has seen BMW Motorrad provide a range of motorcycles along with state-of-the-art computer testing equipment to train students across the country to become the BMW motorcycle technicians of the future.

BMW Motorrad UK’s Aftersales Manager, Dave Alexander, explained: ''The distinctive technical make-up evident in so many BMW models does make it increasingly difficult to employ technicians from other market segments who simply do not have the high level of BMW technical knowledge that is demanded across our dealer network.''

He added: ''In providing BMW Motorrad’s first ever approved motorcycle apprenticeship scheme at Hull College, the Motor Vehicle Centre will have the means to develop a new breed of skilled technicians capable of having a direct impact and vital role in the motorcycle industry.''

Keynote speaker at the event, the Right Honourable Alan Johnson MP, Secretary of State for the Department of Trade and Industry, concluded: ''Today is a good day for education in Hull. Students will not only have the opportunity to develop their skills by working with some of the best motorcycles in the country, but ultimately, they have the opportunity to make a mark within an industry that is such a crucial part of our economy.''

Last week’s opening of the new building also saw the launch of the new Automotive Technologies Centre of Vocational Excellence – the fourth CoVE awarded to Hull College by the Learning Skills Council.

Principal of Hull College, Ms Elaine Mc Mahon, said: '' Hull College is delighted to open its new vocational training centre, which has been completed on time and within budget. With the support of BMW, our students now have a fantastic Motor Vehicle learning environment to provide excellent skills, learning opportunities and qualifications needed in the modern work place.''
