LAZY MOTORISTS DON’T CHECK TYRE PRESSURES
17 November 2005 - Car Parts Direct
According to the RAC 6% of all motorway road deaths are caused by under-inflated tyres.
Tyre manufacturers estimate that three quarters of all accidents caused by “blowouts” are down to incorrect tyre pressures. Research carried out for the RAC revealed that over two million UK motorists never check their tyres and 7% of drivers check them just once a year. Only 21% of motorists claimed to give their tyres the ideal weekly check. Under-inflated tyres results in poor steering, braking, cornering and reduced grip. A car with tyres that are 20% under inflated is also likely to use 12% more fuel and the tyres wear out around 30% earlier than a tyre with the correct pressure. Laziness, lack of awareness and the closure of thousands of service stations in the last decade are blamed for motorists risking their lives every day – the RAC estimate that up-to 90% of tyres are not at the manufacturers recommended pressure. Mail order specialist carparts-direct.co.uk has provided a simple solution to this problem; A powerful 250psi do-it-yourself ‘Tyre compressor kit’ which simply plugs into the cigar lighter socket. Unlike most foot pumps and lesser tyre compressors it has a built in gauge that provides an accurate reading. There is also a built in torch for night time use. It’s very light weight and has a comfortable easy grip rubberised handle – more importantly its compact enough to keep in the boot for an emergency. The Tyre Compressor kit is also ideal for Motorbikes and Cycles where it’s even more important to ensure correct tyre pressures to prevent an accident. The kit it includes adaptors to inflate and deflate airbeds and dinghies too. Mark Cornwall of Carparts-direct said “The RAC claim that 15% of women never check their tyres. If they were aware of the accident statistics I’m sure they wouldn’t go on the school run without checking them first. For any motorist the Tyre compressor kit is really simple to use with no D.I.Y experience required - it’s out of the box and ready to go.”
