LAST MAN STANDING IS DAVID KNIGHT
15 November 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG
Red Bull is known for ingenious events and the Last Man Standing is a prime example.
Take 87 of the most talented off-road riders on the planet and throw them into a one of a kind, elimination style race with a format consisting of two 40-mile laps during the day, and the same two 40-mile loops in reverse direction at night tackling extremely difficult terrain. Only the first half of the riders to finish each loop would continue the race until there were only 18 riders left to contest the last lap. David Knight not only had to overcome obstacles like Joshua trees, a waterfall and the Widow Maker Hill Climb, but the Isle of Man resident battled with flu-like conditions throughout the race. Through it all, he was the one crowned Red Bull''s, ''Last Man Standing''. 7-time National Enduro Champion Mike Lafferty gave Knight a run for his money as the two led the rest of the pack off the starting line and set the pace of the inaugural event. Knight got out to a four minute lead and held off hard-charging Lafferty and 22-year old Nathan Kanney. Laffery then hit a hole of misfortune - literally. The New Jersey resident reached for his water bottle and hit a deep rut and crashed hard, damaging his lights on his bike and helmet. He rode to the pits for repairs, returned to the course in fifth place and moved up to third, finishing behind Kanney. 87 riders started the race, 18 riders tackled the last loop and only 14 finished. KTM took seven out of the top ten positions. Last Man Standing Event Results (Top 10) 1. David Knight KTM 2. Nathan Kanney YAM 3. Mike Lafferty KTM 4. Justin Williamson YAM 5. Billy Russell KTM 6.
