TOP HONOURS FOR HAWK IN MALLORY''S RACE OF THE YEAR
16 October 2005 - Hawk Kawasaki
Hawk Kawasaki signed off a fantastic season’s racing in style today, claiming victory and a double podium in the Mallory Park Race of the Year.
The annual invitation race was won by Hawk Kawasaki star Glen Richards after a race-long battle with Yamaha’s Tommy Hill. The pair provided 20 electrifying laps, at a pace that was quicker than the British Superbike race held earlier in the year. A delighted Glen Richards was joined by team-mate Dean Thomas, who took the final podium position. Thomas was followed home by John McGuinness, who reunited with his former Hawk colleagues for the second time this year. Team owner Stuart Hicken was delighted to take top spot at a circuit that has had a long association with the team. ”It’s great to come back here and put on a show for all the fans” commented Stuart “Race of the Year is such a long-standing institution, and there have been some big name winners over the years. I’m delighted for Glen and for the guys in the team, it’s a great way to end a fantastic year.” Glen Richards was obviously pleased with his day at Mallory. ”It’s been another good weekend for the team, and it was fun to race in a situation where there was no real pressure. Tommy and I had a good old fight and I think it was a race that the spectators will have enjoyed, and we came out top of the pile. I knew I had to leave it to the last lap, at Edwina’s and it all work great. And as it’s the end of the year I can celebrate with a beer or two tonight.” Dean Thomas was also happy with his result. ”It’s been a great day out, I’ve really enjoyed it. I can’t believe that this was actually faster than the BSB race, I really had to get my head down out there. It’s nice to get the last race of the year over and done with, now I can relax and start to plan for 2006.” John McGuinness enjoyed his day with his former team. ”Riding with Hawk is always mega. I’m disappointed that I didn’t make the podium, but I had a bad start and scrapped with Stuart Easton for a fair while, which just left too much to make it. Still, considering the pace I’m pleased, and am pleased to see GR and Deano spraying the champagne.”
