AMA NATIONAL ARENACROSS SERIES KICKS OFF THIS FRIDAY IN ALBANY, N.Y.
26 October 2005 - AMA Pro Racing

Schnell, Johnson, Sellards, Dowd, Northrop & Johnson headline the AMA Arenacross class’ “Opener at Albany” – Oct. 28-30 at Pepsi Arena

A well-schooled field of veteran dirt bike racers highlights the opening round of the 2005-’06 AMA National Arenacross Series opens this Friday (Oct. 28) at Albany’s (N.Y.) Pepsi Arena. And back as one of the favorites following a gnarly get off at the recent U.S. Open of Supercross is Rock Star Energy Drink/Suzuki’s Greg Schnell.

Schnell, who suffered some separated ribs, a thigh injury and bruised vertebrae during a practice session crash at the U.S. Open of Supercross (Oct. 7th), was back on his bike this past Saturday despite still suffering a considerable amount of pain through out his body.

“I’ll be good to go by this weekend,” said Schnell. “I’ll just do my best and see what happens. Try to stay off the ground this weekend and get stronger as the AMA National Arenacross Series goes on.”

The first round of a ten-round series that runs through February - the “Opener at Albany” as it’s come to be known - is always one of the more exciting rounds of the year on the AMA National Arenacross Series tour. Fans will pack Pepsi Arena in great anticipation as to which racers are going to show up to challenge Schnell, Thor/Honda/Tuf Racing teammates Brock Sellards and Jeff Northrop and the AMA National Arenacross Series’ answer to the Houston Astros’ ageless wonder Roger Clemens – 40-year-old Arenacross racer John “Junkyard” Dowd (Chicopee, Mass.).

“With Greg (Schnell) and Brock (Sellards) moving over from supercross and the Outdoor Nationals directly to AMA Arenacross, the foundation for this weekend’s racing is as solid as ever to start the season,” said Dowd. “You also have to consider Jeff Northrop, who was second overall last year and won a number of races. And there’s Chad Johnson, who I remember racing last year. He’s always fast.”

Dowd continued: “Then you’ve got the anticipation factor when you’re hanging around in the pits on Friday. You’ll see some dudes you haven’t raced against since Binghamton or Unadilla, Southwick, roll in and, from there, everybody’s going ‘Yeah! It’s on!’”
