URGENT SPEEDWAY UPDATE
20 October 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association

HOPES of a revival for the famous Birmingham Brummies speedway team have been dashed - by one vote!

The planning application for racing to return to the city at Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium was rejected by the deciding vote of chairman, Councillor David Roy.

A total of 14 members attended the meeting, six did not vote and the remainder resulted in a 4-4 split before Councillor Roy made the final decision.

It means the verdict goes along with the recommendation of the planning officer, Alan Orr, who named noise and disturbance as the main issues.

Tony Mole, the man who made the application for regular Wednesday night racing next Summer, will now consider whether there is a next move to make.

He said: ''It was naturally very disappointing. Only two people actually spoke against the decision, one of them was a lady who raised the traffic noise issue but she was then told it was ireelevant as the highways agency had approved the application.

''Then the chairman spoke out against it, placed his vote accordingly and was then put in the position to vote again, this time as the deciding vote.

''In theory, only one person in that room spoke up against it and that just happened to be the one man who made the final decision.

''I must now go back to the landlords of Perry Barr, the GRA, to discuss the situation with them.

''I cannot really say at this stage whether there will be an appeal, I need to talk to them and then take things from there.''
