CAIROLI WINS RACE ONE, CHIODI SECOND OVERALL
01 August 2004 - Yamaha Racing
Young Italian star Antonio Cairoli (Team Yamaha De Carli) moved another step forward to his first overall GP victory in the GP of the Czech Republic.
Cairoli led the opening race from start to finish, but the Sicilian kid crashed in the second race when he was third. Finally Cairoli finished third overall, behind Alessio Chiodi (Team Yamaha RZ) and Ben Townley (KTM). Townley’s seventh GP win of the season hands him a 106-point lead over Tyla Rattray in the MX2 standings, Sword is third in front of Yamaha trio McFarlane, Cairoli and Chiodi. Race one saw Cairoli blast into the lead, beating Chiodi and Anthony Boissiere (Team Yamaha PSM) for the holeshot. The 18-year old Cairoli delivered a perfect of first place on every lap. Alessio Chiodi tucked in behind Cairoli, but was passed by Marc De Reuver (KTM), making his comeback in Loket. Ben Townley passed Chiodi on lap eight. At the finish flag, Cairoli took the win, followed by De Reuver, Townley, Chiodi and Patrick Caps (Team Yamaha Evolution). French teenager Boissiere came home ninth. By now almost traditionally in the MX 2 class the holeshot was again for a blue mounted rider. Claudio Federici (Team Yamaha De Carli) hit turn one in first place followed by Alessio Chiodi, Ben Townley and Sébastien Pourcel (Kawasaki). Race one winner Cairoli bounces back from fifth after the opening lap and quickly moves up to third behind Chiodi. Bad luck hit Cairoli though and the Italian lost the front wheel in a lose surface corner and crashed back to 10th spot. Chiodi keeps his second place and Townley went on to win the race easily. Chiodi crossed the line in second spot, followed by Pourcel, and Tyla Rattray. Cairoli’s late race effort saw him push to sixth. Alessio Chiodi (Team Yamaha RZ) – second overall “I’m very happy with my second place overall today. I said in Sweden that taking second behind Ben Townley is like a win so I’m happy to have done that again here in Loket. I was a little disappointed in the first race. Unfortunately it rained and I had to take off my goggles which meant that it was very difficult to see the race lines. I was happier in the second race because at the final flag the gap to Ben Townley wasn’t so much and it’s good to be able to still keep up with the younger generation of rider.” Antonio Cairoli (Team Yamaha De Carli) – third overall “In the first race I tried to push really hard because I could see that Marc De Reuver was coming through the pack and I knew that he’d be fast here. I managed to increase my speed though and hold on for the win. I had a good start in the second race but crashed whilst trying to pass Chiodi and take second place. I restarted in tenth and pushed hard to regain places but crashed again. I then decided to ride more consistently and managed to come back up to sixth place at the finish.” Andrea Bartolini (Team Yamaha RZ) – sixth overall “The track was very demanding today and I put in a very big effort in race one which really took all of my energy but I was happy with my sixth place. I was really very tired in race two and did the best I could to both produce a good finishing place and add to my race one result. I finished the race in 8th place and I’m quite happy with that.” Claudio Federici (Team Yamaha De Carli) – seventh overall “I had two good starts today but I struggled to maintain my rhythm in the first race and made many small mistakes which cost me positions in the race. Every rider was very fast today so the racing was very close. In the second race I crashed whilst in the lead and dislocated my thumb. I finished the race but I had to deal with a lot of pain. The doctor managed to relocate the thumb and it’s and injury that I’ve had many times before but it’s still painful. I’ll take some anti-inflammatory medication and I’ll be ready for the next race in Namur.” Andrew McFarlane (Team Yamaha UK) – did not race “I crashed during training last Wednesday and injured my shoulder. I tried to ride here but after the first free practice session on Saturday it was clear that the pain was too severe. I will have an MRI scan on Tuesday to check the full extent of the damage.''
