PHILLIP ISLAND WELCOMES BAZZA’S LOYAL FANS
13 October 2005 - Moto GP
Almost 1000 riders left Bairnsdale this morning to join the ''Ride to the GP - A tribute to Barry Sheene''.
The riders will complete a 300km journey to the Phillip Island circuit with a controlled lap of the famous Australian track as its climax. The convoy were waved off by various V8 drivers and Olympic dual Gold Medallist Kieran Perkins. The riders travelled along the Princes Highway to Morwell where they enjoyed a BBQ lunch at midday. They then made their way along the Strzlecki Highway via Leongatha and then the Bass Highway via Wonthaggi. After regrouping in San Remo, they left for the final leg of the cruise and are scheduled to arrive at Phillip Island at around 16.00. It was the third edition of this tribute to the late Barry Sheene who won the 500cc World Championship twice during a stellar career in which he established himself as the sport’s first global superstar. Having built up a huge following all over the world, Bazza was then accepted warmly by the Australian public as he settled on the Gold Coast and established a distinguished career as a television commentator.
